Sensorit Group and UCT Develop amehlo.ai, Intelligent Vision System to Revolutionise Road Infrastructure Monitoring

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Sensorit Group and the University of Cape Town (UCT) have successfully developed an intelligent vision system designed to detect and analyse potholes, cracks, and road markings. This cutting-edge technology, a product of innovation and teamwork, demonstrates the power of partnerships between academia and industry in solving real-world challenges.

Harnessing Innovation for Infrastructure

The intelligent vision system utilises advanced cameras and AI-driven algorithms to monitor road conditions in real time. By detecting and analyzing road defects such as potholes, surface cracks, and faded markings, the system provides critical insights that can help authorities prioritize repairs, improve road safety, and optimize infrastructure maintenance budgets.

The project represents a bold step toward using technology to address South Africa’s deteriorating road conditions, which are a major concern for both municipalities and road users.

A Collaborative Effort with UCT

Sensorit Group partnered with UCT to develop the technology, employing a team of students and professors to contribute to the project. This collaboration provided UCT students with valuable experience in engineering, computer science, and data analysis while leveraging the expertise of professors to refine the system.

To test the system, Sensorit Group and UCT conducted a six-month proof of concept (PoC) using the university’s student shuttle buses. Cameras were installed on the buses to collect data as they traveled regular routes around Cape Town. This approach not only minimised costs but also provided extensive coverage of urban road networks.

Success of the Proof of Concept

The PoC was a resounding success. Over six months, the intelligent vision system:

  • Captured extensive data on road conditions.
  • Analysed the data to identify potholes, cracks, and faded road markings with high accuracy.
  • Delivered actionable insights that demonstrated its potential to assist municipalities and road authorities in maintaining infrastructure.

The results confirmed the system’s reliability and functionality, showcasing its potential to become a game-changer for road infrastructure management.

Benefits of the Intelligent Vision System:

  1. Cost-Effective Maintenance: By identifying problem areas early, authorities can address small issues before they escalate, saving on repair costs.
  2. Enhanced Road Safety: Detecting and repairing hazards quickly reduces risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  3. Data-Driven Insights: The system provides municipalities with actionable data to prioritize repairs and allocate resources efficiently.
  4. Scalability: The system can be adapted for use on various types of vehicles, from public transport fleets to municipal service vehicles.

Empowering Students and Shaping the Future

The partnership with UCT not only led to the development of an innovative solution but also empowered students by providing them with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology. By involving academia, Sensorit Group has shown a commitment to fostering local talent and bridging the gap between education and industry.

Looking Ahead

With the success of the proof of concept, Sensorit Group plans to scale the project and partner with local governments, transportation companies, and other stakeholders to roll out the system nationwide. The intelligent vision system has the potential to transform road maintenance, improve infrastructure, and create safer journeys for millions of South Africans.

This initiative highlights how technology, collaboration, and innovation can address pressing challenges while creating opportunities for growth and development. Sensorit Group and UCT’s collaboration is a testament to the possibilities that arise when industry and academia work together toward a common goal.
